LAI FOONG MOI
• Born i n S eremban, Negeri S embilan i n 1931
• Enrolled at Nanyang Academy of Fine A rts f rom 1950
to 1953
• Awarded a scholarship by the French Government
to study at Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris in
Paris, France f rom 1954 to 1958
• The first Malaysian-born woman artist to study art in
Paris a nd was i nf luenced by Post-Impressionism
• Emerged in the Malayan art scene as one of the few
women a rtists i n t he 1950s
• Held a teaching position at the Nanyang Academy of
Fine A rts (NAFA) f rom 1958 u ntil 1994
• She invited Professor Chapelain Midy, her lecturer at
Ecole Nationale des Beaux A rts de Paris to v isit NAFA
• Participated in group exhibitions Salon de Mai and
Salon Autumn i n Paris between 1954 a nd 1958
• Known for her iconic portrait study of an elderly
Chinese San Sui construction worker dated 1967 in the
collection of National Visual Arts Gallery, Malaysia
which represents the working class
• Died i n Singapore i n 1995
